תחנות כוח סולאריות המבוססות על טכנולוגית ריכוז אור שמש concentrated solar power משתמשות באנרגית חום כדי לחמם מים לקיטור ולהניע טורבינות.

אחד האתגרים שעומדים מול המהנדסים של אותם תחנות הוא זה שבדרך כלל שעות צריכת החשמל הגבוהה הן דפקה בלילה אחרי שהעובדים חוזרים לבתים שלהם ובזמן זה אין שמש ואין יצירת חשמל.

על מנת לנצל אנרגית שמש בשעות היום גם בשעות הלילה צריך לאגור את האנרגיה, לצורך אגירת אנרגיה משתמשים בעודף אנרגיה בשעות היום לצורך התכת מלחים בעלי קיבול חום גבוהה ובכך לאחסן בהם אנרגיית החום.

מכלי המלחים והצינורות שבהם הם מוזרמים עשויות מפלב''ם L316 וחשופיים לקורוזיה בגלל החשיפה למלחים וזה גורם לכשלים בלתי הפכים בקו.
